Hunting
Hunting is the profession of traps. You set a trap in a hunting ground, go do something else and come back in time to collect the prey: feathers, hides and meat.
How it works
- Each hunting ground has trap spots. Walk up to one, choose the prey and set the trap it needs.
- The prey gets caught on its own after a few minutes, even with the game closed, and waits 12 hours for you. If you don’t come back in time, it escapes and the bait is lost.
- To collect it, walk to the trap. Each trap gives one prey per setting: then you set it again.
- The trap is not used up when you set it, but it sometimes breaks when you collect a prey. You need as many traps of each kind in your backpack as you have set.
- You get one trap per spot. Other players’ traps show in the world with their name, but nobody touches yours.
- Experience is time-based, like every profession: each prey is worth its minutes split across 3 traps. With several traps going at once you level much faster.
Getting started
Talk to Maera the Trapper, in the clearing south of Aurelia: she explains Hunting and shows you the hunting grounds. Your first snare costs 1 at the general store; with it you can catch hares from level 0.
- Go to a trap spot in the Pinewood Clearing (double click or E), choose the hare and set the snare.
- While you wait, set another at a different spot once you have room, or do something else nearby.
- Carry a knife in your backpack: without one, the hides of your prey are left behind.
The four hunting grounds
Each hunting ground has six trap spots and its own prey. The four are far apart: the Pinewood is for beginners and the snow is for high-level hunters.
| Hunting ground | Prey | Spots |
|---|---|---|
| Pinewood Clearing | Hare (0), Partridge (5), Pheasant (12) | 6 |
| Dark Woods | Fox (20), Dawn owl (35) | 6 |
| Western Sands | Sand lizard (28) | 6 |
| Southwest Snows | Ermine (45), Ice pigeon (55), White fox (65) | 6 |
The prey
What each prey needs and what it drops. Minutes are for an average prey: each setting takes a bit more or a bit less.
| Prey | Hunting ground | Level | Trap | Bait | Minutes | Experience | Drops |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hare | Pinewood Clearing | 0 | Snare | No bait | 2 | 8 | 1 × Game meat 1 × Game hide (50 %) 2–5 × Worms (50 %) |

| White fox | Southwest Snows | 65 | Iron trap | Frost meat | 18 | 159 | 2–3 × Frost hide 1 × Frost meat 1 × Musk gland (60 %) |
The traps
There are five traps. The snare is bought; the others are crafted. Setting a trap always uses the best free one of its type.
| Trap | How to get it | Breaks on collect |
|---|---|---|
| Snare | General store · 1 Carpentry 0: 2 × Pine plank | 10 % |
| Box trap | Carpentry 15: 3 × Oak plank | 5 % |
| Hunting net | Artisanry 8: 3 × Linen cloth | 8 % |
| Iron trap | Smithing 30: 3 × Iron bar, 1 × Handle | 2 % |
| Spring trap | Smithing 40: 3 × Iron bar, 2 × Spring, 1 × Handle | 1 % |
| Braided snare | Carpentry 30: 3 × Willow plank | 5 % |
| Maple box trap | Carpentry 45: 4 × Maple plank | 2 % |
| Yew snare | Carpentry 60: 4 × Yew plank | 2 % |
| Redwood box trap | Carpentry 90: 5 × Redwood plank | 1 % |
Traps you can have set at once, by Hunting level:
| Traps set | From Hunting level |
|---|---|
| 1 | 0 |
| 2 | 10 |
| 3 | 30 |
| 4 | 50 |
| 5 | 70 |
The spring trap is a steel trap that almost never breaks. It takes Spring, which only come from Salvaging: taking apart a big metal piece (four bars or more, iron and up) gives a spring.
Hides and meat
- Hides follow the same rule as adventures: you only get them with a knife in your backpack and the Skinning level for that hide. Each hide gives Skinning experience.
- Meat is multiplied by Butchery, just like in adventures, and gives Butchery experience.
- If the drop doesn’t fit in your backpack, nothing is collected: the prey keeps waiting for you.
The bait is used when you set the trap, even if the prey escapes.
Now and then a big one gets caught: it drops everything that prey can drop, each at double the maximum. It happens to 4 % of catches; if you tick «Use essence» when setting the trap, you spend one Hunter's essence and it happens to 20 %.
Hunting has its own skill pet, Bear Cub: it turns up very rarely when you collect prey (on average, one every 400 hours or so of trapping) and, while equipped, gives 5% more Hunting experience.
With the other professions
Hunting sits in the middle of several professions: some give it what it needs to set traps and others use what it brings back.

Tips
- Spread your traps across the spots of one hunting ground: you collect them all in one round.
- Set them all before going to bed: they wait for you in the morning, with 12 hours to spare.
- Ice and luminous feathers only come with rune bait: save ice and light runes if you want good arrows.
- Carry spares: traps break now and then, and without a free one you can’t set again.
