Spells

A spell is learned by reading its book, and the book is consumed. The character learns it, not the account, and you carry two at a time.

#Magic

They cost mana and need a magic weapon — a staff or a wand — and they hit with the sheet magic damage. Any class can cast them: all it takes is the weapon, not the class.

#Shouts

They cost LIFE and need nothing. A warrior has no mana, and without shouts half the classes in the game watched the spell system go by without being able to touch it. They hit with physical damage, which is the stat a warrior does raise, so they improve with the gear they were already building.

The cost is a percentage of MAXIMUM life, not of what is left: on what is left, shouting would get cheaper and cheaper exactly when it should be most dangerous. And a shout will not fire if it drops you to zero — when you are that low it stops being available on its own, which is exactly the moment you should not have shouted.

There is no healing shout, and it is not an oversight: paying life to get life back is a sum that can only come out zero or worse. The shout heals the other way — by killing sooner — and for holding on there is the one that makes a shield.
