Toil
Toil is the profession task you hand to a Master: for anywhere from 2 to 8 hours your character mines, chops, fishes, gathers herbs, draws essence or skins on their own, and when it ends everything gathered goes to their backpack. It yields far less than doing it yourself, but you do not have to be there.
Toil: your character gathers materials on their own for a while, without you having to watch.
What it is
- There is one Master for each gathering profession: mining, woodcutting, fishing and herbalism, one for Runecrafting essence and one for skinning, who brings you hides without going out to fight, and one for farming, who sows the seeds you bring.
- You pay for the task, choose how long it lasts and your character starts working alone.
- It yields far less than gathering at the spot yourself: gathering by hand gets much more per hour and costs no energy. Toil is for when you cannot be there.
- Your profession also levels up from what is gathered, at that same pace.
The six Masters
All seven are in and around Aurelia. Walk up to the one you want and double-click, or press E, to talk to them.
- Mining: Durgan, Master Miner, in the mine
- Woodcutting: Torvald, Master Woodcutter, by the pines, south of the square
- Fishing: Corwin, Master Fisher, at the harbor
- Herbalism: Ysolde, Master Herbalist, by the sage bushes to the west
- Runecrafting: Nerea, Master Runecrafter, by the essence veins and the earth altar, south of the city
- Skinning: Brannoc, Master of Skinning, next to the hunter, east of the square
- Farming: Odila, Master of Farming, in the Northern Garden, next to Brígida
Each Master only takes tasks of their own profession.
What it costs
A task is paid when it starts, with energy and gold.
- Energy: 10 per hour of task (2 h → 20 · 4 h → 40 · 6 h → 60 · 8 h → 80).
- Length: 2 h · 4 h · 6 h · 8 h.
| Profession level | 2-hour task | 8-hour task |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | 3,750 | 9,360 |
| 25 | 5,750 | 14,352 |
| 50 | 9,500 | 23,712 |
| 75 | 14,000 | 34,944 |
| 99 | 17,250 | 43,056 |
The Master charges by what you will get: the more valuable it is (by your level and your tool), the more they charge. It always costs more than a merchant would pay you for it: what you buy is the experience and the materials while you are away. The table is for mining with the best pickaxe. Per hour, a short task costs more than a long one.
The tool
- You need the profession tool in your backpack, just like when gathering by hand. The stash does not count.
- The tool limits what you get: only what you could gather yourself with it comes out. With a high mining level and the basic pickaxe, you get what the basic pickaxe gets and nothing more.
- Without a tool that works, the Master cannot give you the task.
- To get something lower, bring a worse tool: the three materials go down with it, with no extra empty rolls. If you carry several of the same kind in your backpack, you pick which one to work with in the Master’s window: it starts on the best one and the table shows what comes out with each.
- The same goes for shears and knives, even though it is not so by hand: by hand any pair cuts every herb or hide of your level, but in Toil each one asks for its own tool tier. With a high level and copper shears or a copper knife, you get the herbs or hides that copper cuts.
- In fishing, the Master provides the bait: it is already in the price, so you do not need to bring any.
What you get
You do not choose what comes out: every time your character gathers something, it comes from a table with the three highest materials your level and your tool allow. The lowest of the three comes out the most and the highest the least, but more and more as you level up. If you want something lower, switch tools: with a worse one, the three are different. The higher you go, the fewer rolls come up empty.

Every time your character tries, they may get nothing. That chance starts high when you are new to the profession and drops as you level it up: the “Nothing” row of each table shows it, and the material percentages already account for it. Each material you get gives you half the profession experience it would give by hand.
Examples with the best tools of each profession. If you level up during the task, the table improves right then.
In mining, the Master can also bring you rough gems, just like when you mine yourself, but with less luck: mining by hand you get about one every 100 ores, and with Toil one every 800. Which gem it is depends on the vein, same as by hand. Gems are never lost: they go to your backpack if there is room, and to your stash if not.
Farming
- Farming works differently: there is no table. You pick which seed to sow from a dropdown with the ones in your backpack or materials tab, and the Master sows and harvests that.
- Each sowing uses one seed and gives the harvest for your level (3 to 6). When harvesting, the seed sometimes comes back, just like when you farm yourself.
- If you run out of seeds, it stops: the task ends early and you only pay for the work done. Leftover seeds go back to your backpack.
- You need a sickle: the better it is, the faster it sows. Fruit trees are not included: those are planted once and keep giving on their own.
When it ends
- When it ends, everything gathered goes to your character’s backpack: it adds to what you already carry even if it is full, but if a material is new and there is no free slot, it is lost. Make room before you start.
- You can cancel the task at any time: you keep what was worked up to that point, but what you paid is not refunded.
