Some weapons and chest pieces that drop come with holes: one, two or, very rarely, three sockets. Into each socket goes a cut gem that adds a fixed bonus to the piece. Once set it cannot be taken out: only the Jeweler empties a socket, and the gem is lost.
A socket is a hole in the piece. It comes empty and you fill it, with any of the six cut gems that come from Artisanry.
The gem's bonus adds to your stats like any other stat on the piece. It is fixed: it is worth the same in a grade I sword as in a grade V one, regardless of rarity or Excellence.
This is how a piece with two sockets, one holding a ruby and one empty, looks on its card:
Only two kinds of piece can come with sockets:
And only if they drop: in Adventures, in Dungeons, from bosses and from Chests. They show up at any grade, from I to the last.
Forged, sewn or bought gear never has sockets: if it did, crafting would be a way to buy the chance with gold, and a socket would stop being a reward for fighting. Neither do tools, unique pieces or anything that stacks.
Sockets belong to each piece, not to the model: two identical swords can have none and three. They travel with the piece to the vault, to another character on your account and to the market.
Every weapon or chest piece that drops, of any grade, rolls once:
| Sockets | Chance | One in |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 0.08% | 1,250 pieces |
| 2 | 0.8% | 125 pieces |
| 1 | 5% | 20 pieces |
| None | 94.12% | — |
The rows exclude each other: a piece with three sockets does not also count as one with two. The piece drops with all its holes empty.
Each gem gives one thing in a weapon and another in a chest piece:
Two identical gems in the same piece add up. Critical, evasion, speed and life steal stay low on purpose: a gem is worth a very good stat, no more.
Every cut gem comes in five qualities: chipped, flawed, cut, flawless and perfect. Three of one quality make one of the next at the artisan table (Cut tab), and the better the gem, the more it adds. Cutting also leaves a chipped gem as a bonus. All five can be socketed; the numbers above go from chipped to perfect.
Osric, jeweler is in the smithy of Aurelia, next to Mirta, artisan. Walk up and press E to open his window: it lists your pieces with gems (in the backpack, the vault and worn) and the price of emptying each socket. See on the map
Emptying one socket costs 5 story quests of the piece's level: the level is the first one of its grade on the gear ladder, and the total is rounded to the thousand.
| Piece grade | Level | Gold of one story quest | Empty one socket |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | 0 | 2,000 | 10,000 |
| II | 11 | 16,520 | 83,000 |
| III | 22 | 60,080 | 300K |
| IV | 33 | 132K | 663K |
| V and above | 45 | 245K | 1,225K |
On the Market, each piece's card shows its sockets: the gems it holds with their bonus, or "Empty socket". The "With sockets" filter keeps only pieces that have any. The piece is sold whole, with its gems inside.
If you sell a piece with gems to a merchant, the gems add nothing to its price and are lost with the piece. The game warns you before selling.
