Gems

Gems come from mining veins and are cut at the artisan table. There are six, and each one comes in five qualities: three of one make one of the next. They go into the sockets of weapons and chest pieces, are set into rings and necklaces, and can be sold.

The six gems

Each gem does one thing: what it adds in a weapon is different from what it adds in a chest piece. The deeper the vein, the better the gems.

The five qualities

Every cut gem comes in five qualities. 3 of one quality make one of the next at the artisan table, in the cutting tab: that is the ladder below. Each step asks for more Artisanry.

Onyx
  1. Chipped
  2. Flawed
  3. Cut
  4. Flawless
  5. Perfect

Combining costs no gold, never fails and cannot be undone: three flawed gems do not turn back into chipped ones. It takes as long as cutting.

What a perfect gem takes

  1. 1×Perfect
  2. 3×Flawless
  3. 9×Cut
  4. 27×Flawed
  5. 81×Chipped

One perfect gem is 3 flawless, 9 cut, 27 flawed or 81 chipped gems. Since every gem you cut also leaves a chipped one as a bonus, nothing is wasted: chipped gems add up three at a time until they become cut gems again.

Where they come from

Every ore you take from a vein has a 1% chance to also bring an uncut gem, at no extra energy. Which gem depends on the vein. From Mining 30 it rolls twice; in lower veins the second roll gives a chipped gem directly, ready to combine.

The table shows the chance per ore of each gem in each vein: the stronger the color, the more often it drops. Onyx is extremely rare (0.06% per ore) and only drops in the deepest veins.

Cutting

At the artisan table, with the artisan needle in your backpack. One uncut gem gives one cut gem and, always, a chipped gem as a bonus. It costs no gold.

Every cut leaves 1 chipped gem: three cuts already give you what a flawed gem needs.

In sockets

Some weapons and chest pieces that drop come with sockets. Each gem set in one adds a fixed bonus, and its quality decides how much: each bar is one quality, from chipped to perfect.

All five qualities can be socketed. Once set it does not come out: only the Jeweler empties the socket, and the gem is lost.

Sockets

In jewelry

Gems also end up in rings and necklaces, by two paths at the artisan table.

Talismans and build rings

They are set with ingots and one chipped gem: the lowest quality is enough.

Mold jewelry

You cast ingots in the ring or necklace mold and set a gem into it. The ring takes the gem's weapon bonus; the necklace, its chest piece bonus. Each metal asks for a quality:

MetalGem it needsSettingRingNecklace
Bronze barFlawed Artisanry 12
Silver barCut Artisanry 32
Gold barFlawless Artisanry 52

Molds are bought once and are never used up. Casting and setting cost no gold: the gem is the expensive part.

What they are worth

What any vendor pays for each gem, by quality. Mirta, artisan, by the artisan table, pays 25% more.

Amethyst 130 14 42 126 321 818

On the market players set the price: good gems are usually worth much more than what a merchant pays.
